RICHMOND, Va. - The Wake Forest men's tennis team, making its first-ever NCAA appearance, was swept by second-seeded Virginia Commonwealth, 4-0, in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Region II Tournament in Richmond, VA. The loss eliminates the Demon Deacons from further postseason play.
The Rams jumped to an early lead by winning the first two matches to earn the doubles point. VCU's Daniel Andersson and Manuel Kropfreiter defeated Wake's Myles Clouston and Raul Munoz at the No. 1 position, 8-4, while Sonny Chou and Andres Guzman fell to the Rams' Jose Manual Sanchez and Richard Wernerhjelm, 8-3, at the No. 2 spot. The third doubles match was halted.
VCU continued to dominate the Deacs in singles play, sweeping the first three matches to earn the shutout win and nullify further play. Clouston fell to Andersson, 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 1 position, and Munoz was defeated by Wernerhjelm, 6-0, 6-3 at No. 3. In the deciding match, Wake's Chou was defeated by Olle Lundberg, 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 5 position. Wake Forest closes out the 1998 season with an overall record of 14-12.
