Oklahoma Wins the 1998 Deacon Invitational

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The University of Oklahoma posted a perfect record of 4-0 to claim the 1998 Deacon Invitational. OU was led by all-tournament selections Melissa Christman and Meredith van Horn, the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Wake Forest freshman Trina Maso de Moya was also selected to the all-tournament team. The Demon Deacons finished second with a record of 3-1, followed by Marshall (2-2), St. John's (1-3) and Appalachian State (0-4). The following is a match-by-match recap of the tournament's second day action.
Match 1- Oklahoma d. Marshall, 3-2 (15-3, 15-11, 13-15, 11-15, 15-12)
Oklahoma's Meredith Van Horn recorded a tournament high 69 assists for the Sooners. Melissa Christman, Maria Holmgren and Melissa Stringfield each registered double figures in kills and digs. Jessica DeGraaf and Wendy Williams also recorded double digits in kills and digs.
Match 2- St. John's d. Appalachian State, 3-0 (15-8, 15-7, 15-4)
Stasha Levi and Olga Roudovski each finished with double figures in kills to lead the Red Storm to its lone victory of the tournament. Connie Chae's 35 assists was one more than the entire Appalachian State team. Tiffany White had 33 of Appalachian's 34 assists.
Match 3 - Oklahoma d. Wake Forest (8-15, 15-11, 15-13, 15-10)
Oklahoma rebounded from a first game lost to take the next three from the Deacons and go undefeated in this year's tournament. Meredith Van Horn registered 60 plus assists for the second consecutive game, 65. Melissa Christman led the Sooners with 18 kills. Wake Forest's Katie Horne and Trina Maso de Moya each recorded 17 kills for the Deacons, while sophomore Julie Cowley had 44 assists.
Match 4- Marshall d. St. John's, 3-1 (10-15, 15-10, 15-12, 15-12)
Marshall had five players finish with double figures in the kills category. Juanita Venable led the way with 14. Two of those five players recorded double-doubles also reaching double digits in digs as well, Wendy Williams and Jessica Downs. Stasha Levi and Olga Roudovski once again finished with double figures in digs and kills.
Match 5 - Wake Forest d. Appalachian State, 3-0 (15-12, 15-4, 15-9)
Freshman Trina Maso de Moya tallied 17 kills and 15 digs to lead Wake Forest to a three-game sweep over in-state rival Appalachian State. Fellow freshman Margaret Davidson also had nine kills in 17 attempts. Junior Amber Grahn reached double figures in both assists and digs for the Deacons. All-tournament selection Stephanie Young finished with a total of 10 kills for Appalachian State.
