NEW YORK - (AP) MVP Michael Jordan of Chicago and MVP runner-up Karl Malone of Utah, picked so frequently for the All-NBA team that they're almost automatics, made it again Wednesday and were joined by three first-time choices. Joining them on the first team were Rookie of the Year Tim Duncan of San Antonio, center Shaquille O'Neal of Los Angeles and guard Gary Payton of Seattle.
Jordan was a unanimous pick for the fifth time and Malone for the third time, each receiving the maximum 116 first team votes from a panel of writers and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada.
Jordan and Malone received 580 points each and each made the first team for the 10th time. Payton got 561, O'Neal 544 and Duncan 370 and all were first team picks for the first time.
Duncan, the first rookie to make the team since Larry Bird in 1979-80, received 45 first-team votes and 370 points. Just three weeks past his 22nd birthday, he is the second youngest All-NBA pick in history, behind only Max Zaslofsky, who was 21 years and four months old when he was picked for the first All-NBA team in 1946-47.
The second team was made up of Detroit's Grant Hill (290) and Seattle's Vin Baker (269) at forward; San Antonio's David Robinson (332) at center; and Miami's Tim Hardaway (245) and Washington's Rod Strickland (173) at guard.
Picked for the third team were Chicago's Scottie Pippen (201) and Charlotte's Glen Rice (179) at forward; Atlanta's Dikembe Mutombo (80) at center; and Washington's Mitch Richmond (139) and Indiana's Reggie Miller (124) at guard
