RICHMOND, Va. - The Virginia Commonwealth University volleyball team put up a fight Tuesday night before succumbing as Wake Forest earned the sweep 15-10, 15-7, 15-6.
The Rams held the lead for much of the first game and rallied from an early deficit in the second before falling. In game one, VCU jumped out to leads of 5-2 and 8-6 before Wake Forest came back. In the second game, Wake Forest jumped out to leads of 4-1 and 7-4 before the Rams rallied to within a point. Rams coach Cheryl Carlson said the team adjusted nicely to get back in the second game.
"We came out after that second timeout and slowed them down. I thought we did a really good job of that," Carlson said. "Wake Forest is a good team. I think this match will prepare us well for a couple of games down the road."
For the second straight match, the Rams had four players notch at least five kills. Sophomore outside hitter Summer Segars (Houston, Texas) led VCU with nine kills. Kristen Didio (Midlothian, Va.) and Jennifer West (Franklin, Va.) each contributed eight kills and eight digs. Mary Franke (Ft. Wayne, Ind.) recorded one service ace to move to within aces two of third place on the VCU career chart.
The Rams will be in action again on Friday when they face James Madison in Harrisonburg, Va.. The match is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
