CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - No. 19 Virginia extended its 21-year winning streak against Wake Forest by scoring the final five points for a 71-67 victory in Saturday's Atlantic Coast Conference tournament quarterfinals.
The Cavaliers' 42nd consecutive victory over the Demon Deacons was in doubt until the closing seconds, thanks in large part to Wake Forest making 11 of 18 shots from 3-point range.
There were 10 lead changes and nine ties in the final 13 minutes before Monick Foote hit an 8-footer from the right wing to put the Cavaliers up 69-67 with 30 seconds left.
Olivia Dardy missed a 3-pointer on the other end and Virginia's Erin Stovall got the rebound and was fouled. She hit both free throws to account for the final margin.
Virginia (20-7) got 23 points from DeMya Walker and 10 from Elena Kravchenko.
Sophomore Janae Whiteside hit seven of eight from 3-point range and had a career-high 23 points to lead Wake Forest (8-20). The Demon Deacons also got 13 from Heidi Coleman, 12 from Olivia Dardy and 11 from Emon McMillian.
The Demon Deacons' drought against Virginia stretches back so far - to Jan. 13, 1978 - that 11 of the 14 players on this season's Wake Forest roster had not even been born. The Demon Deacons are 1-44 against Virginia, including losses by 31 and 20 points during the 1998-99 regular season.
Wake Forest reversed that trend Saturday with some timely perimeter shooting and aggressive play on defense, limiting Virginia to 41-percent shooting.
The Demon Deacons opened the second half by hitting 3-pointers on five of their first nine possessions, giving them a 44-39 lead with 14:46 remaining, and it stayed close the rest of the way.
