WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The freshman trio of LaChina Robinson, Val Klopfer, and Adell Harris keyed a dominating second-half run to lift the Wake Forest women's basketball team to a 77-72 victory over visiting Georgia Tech on Monday night at Joel Coliseum. The win, which marked the Demon Deacons' first home ACC victory since the 1996-97 season, improved Wake's record to 6-8 overall and 2-2 in the ACC. Georgia Tech fell to 9-4 overall and 2-2 in the conference.
Wake Forest trailed 35-30 at halftime and fell behind by as many as 12 points early in the second half. Trailing 52-40 with 10:27 on the clock, the Deacons exploded for a 28-7 run over the next 6:28 to take a nine-point lead. Robinson scored 12 points during that run, while Klopfer added eight. Harris was the true key to the comeback, however, dishing seven assists and making two steals in that stretch. Tech made a late rally and got within one point, 73-72, on a Kenya Williams layup with 18.4 seconds to go. But Deacon rookie Liz Rogers scored a fast-break layup and Emon McMillian sunk two free throws to seal the win.
Georgia Tech outrebounded Wake Forest, 51-39, but the Deacons forced 26 turnovers in the game and converted them into 28 points. Wake shot 42 percent from the floor and tallied 22 assists on 30 field goals.
Robinson finished with a game- and career-high 22 points, hitting 10-of-15 shots from the floor. The freshman center also tallied eight rebounds, three blocks, and two steals. Klopfer shot 6-of-10 from the field, including three three-pointers, to net a career-best 18 points, while Harris dished a jaw-dropping 10 assists, all in the game's last 10 minutes, while also making three steals. McMillian added 10 points and eight rebounds for the Deacs.
For the Yellow Jackets, sophomore forward Regina Tate tallied 17 points and 13 rebounds, while Williams and freshman guard Niesha Butler had 13 points each.
Wake Forest is back in action next Monday, Jan. 11th, when they host Duke at Joel Coliseum at 7 p.m.
