WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - Wake Forest coach Charlene Curtis arrived too late in Winston-Salem to recruit West Forsyth prep star LaQuanda Barksdale, but not late enough to avoid her.
Barksdale scored a career-high 26 points in front of a hometown crowd and added six rebounds and three blocks to lead sixth-ranked North Carolina to a 100-75 victory over the Demon Deacons on Saturday.
"She had an excellent game for them," Curtis said. "I just regret that I wasn't here to at least have a shot at recruiting her."
Nikki Teasley added 20 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds for the Tar Heels, who forced 29 turnovers and converted them into 37 points. Chanel Wright scored 18 points, while Juana Brown had 10 points and eight rebounds.
"We're very balanced on the floor and we like to move the ball up and down the court," said North Carolina coach Sylvia Hatchell. "That style is great for women's basketball on the whole. We aren't a big team at all, but we're pretty deep."
Wake Forest (5-8, 1-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) used a 12-0 run to take an 18-12 lead in the first half, but North Carolina (16-1, 3-0) responded with a 10-0 run of its own and never trailed again.
Olivia Dardy scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds for Wake Forest. Emon McMillian added 10 points, while Alisha Mosley tied a career high with six assists.
Both teams shot 47 percent from the field, but North Carolina took 14 more shots than Wake Forest hit 27-of-41 free throw attempts. The Demon Deacons were 18-of-19 from the foul line.
"The complete difference in the game was turnovers, especially in the first half," Curtis said. " We did not have enough shot opportunities, but it was our lack of aggressiveness and their aggressiveness that really caused a lot of those turnovers."
