Women's Volleyball Upends No. 24 North Carolina

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Leading 2-1, Wake Forest held off 24th ranked North Carolina, 3-1, at Reynolds Gym on Friday evening. It was the Tar Heels first loss in the Atlantic Coast Conference this season and the Deacons first win over UNC since 1973.
The Deacons are now 16-5 on the year and 4-3 in the ACC. North Carolina falls to 18-4 and 7-1 in the league, suffering their first loss since Sept. 11. The 'Heels had won 14 consecutive prior to tonight. It was the Deacons' first win over a ranked opponent since the program was reinstated in 1996.
An inspired Deacon attack opened up game one with a 15-11 victory and dominated game two, 15-5. The Deacons were once again led by freshman Trina Maso de Moya, who had a career-high 25 digs to go along with a team-high 18 kills.
The Tar Heels, refused to go away and jumped ahead of the Deacons early in game three. Wake Forest fought back, cutting the lead to four, 12-8, but could get no closer as UNC took the third game, 15-8. North Carolina's Tori Seibert finished with a game-high 20 kills and 15 digs. Erin Berg and Maya Starks each recorded 22 digs for the Tar Heels.
The fourth and final game had to go beyond the regular 15-point game. The Deacons, trailing 13-11, rallied to come from behind and win game four 17-15. Sophomore Julie Cowley served two straight points to knot the game at 14. The Tar Heel went up one and then following a couple of side-outs Maso de Moya served the match winning point.
Four players had double-double night for the Deacons. Maso de Moya, Katie Horne and Christy Kelly all finished with double figures in both kills and digs, while Cowley had 60 assists to go with her 16 digs. Junior Sara Kryder had a career-high 15 digs and freshman Margaret Davidson also had a career-high in block assists with nine.
Wake Forest returns to competition tomorrow night, Oct. 17 against NC State. Gametime is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Reynolds Gym.
