Deacons Advance in NCAA Singles Championships

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Wake Forest sophomore Mariel Verban and freshman Janet Bergman each won their first round match of the 1999 NCAA Women's Singles Championships on Monday afternoon. Both players won in straight sets.

Verban defeated Agnes Muzamel of Mississippi in 1:37, 7-5, 6-4. The win was her 41st of the season, the most by any Deacon tennis player during a season. Verban is currently ranked 11th in the Inercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) singles rankings.

Bergman, ranked 41st in the ITA, defeated Jacqui Boyd of Southern California in less than an hour, 50 minutes, 6-0, 6-0. It was her 30th win of the season, moving her into a tie for seventh place on the Wake Forest single season wins list.

Both players advance to Tuesday's second round. Competition will begin at 9 a.m.
