WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The 16th ranked Wake Forest Demon Deacons defeated Furman, 8-1, at the Indoor Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon. The Deacons (6-6) are now 18-2 all-time against the Paladins (7-7).
Sophomore Mariel Verban recorded her 30th win of the season, by defeating Megan Dunigan 6-1, 6-1. It is only the 12th time in Deacon history that an individual has won 30 matches in a season. Verban joined the exclusive eight member club last season with 31 wins in 1998.
The Deacons won all six singles matches. Freshman Janet Bergman won 12 straight sets at the No. 2 flight position. She defeated Meredith Moore by scores of 6-0 and 6-0. Sophomore Jackie Houston won for the first time in over a week, snapping a two-match skid. She downed Gene Holman, 6-1 and 6-1, at No. 4 singles.
Wake Forest will play their next three matches away from home. The Deacons first opponent during that stretch will be No. 1 Florida in Gainesville, Fla. on Thursday, March 25.
