MADISON, Wis. - Trailing 3-1 in its match with sixth-ranked Mississippi, No. 9 Wake Forest rallied to win four of the final five matches and defeated the Lady Rebels, 5-4, during the consolation round of the 1999 USTA/ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championships. The tournament is being held on the campus of the University of Wisconsin. The Deacons improve to 2-3 on the year, while Ole Miss falls to 6-2.
Tied at four matches each, it was the No. 2 doubles match that decided the outcome. The Deacon's unranked duo of Maren Haus and Caroline Ullring upset the No. 9 ranked doubles team of Agnes Muzamel and Courtenay Chapman, 9-7.
Wake sophomore Mariel Verban, ranked sixth by the ITA, defeated the nation's fourth ranked player, Agnes Muzamel, in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-1 at the No. 1 flight position. It was the second time Verban had beaten her this season, both times in which Muzamel was ranked ahead of Verban.
Freshman Janet Bergman and senior Caroline Ullring also posted wins in singles' competition for the Deacs as did the doubles team of Lea Miller and Annemarie Milton.
