Demon Deacons Fall in NCAA Women's Tennis Regional

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Wake Forest ended its 1999 season with a 5-2 loss to South Carolina in the Regional Final of the NCAA Championships at Maxcy Gregg Park on Sunday afternoon. The Deacons conclude the season with a final overall record of 16-11.
South Carolina (18-7) jumped out to a 3-0 lead when Lynn-Yin Tan, Tamara Sutton and Celine Regnier all captured straight set victories. Wake got on the board when 11th ranked Mariel Verban down Katarina Markovski in straight sets 7-5, 6-1. The Gamecocks went up 4-1 when Leigh Eichelberger came from a set down to knock off the Deacons' Jackie Houston at No. 4 singles. Maren Haus helped the Deacs hold off elimination by defeating Jennifer Radman in three sets to send the match to doubles.
South Carolina's duo of Markovski and Regnier jumped out to a 7-0 lead over Verban and Janet Bergman before Wake rallied to cut the lead to 7-5. Down 40-0, Markovski's tough serving brought the Gamecocks back to win the game and the match.
Wake Forest's Mariel Verban and Janet Bergman will each compete in the NCAA Individual Championships in Gainesville, Florida beginning May 23.
