ATHENS, Ga. --- The No. 3 Georgia Women's tennis team won all three doubles matches and came back from a 4-2 deficit to clip No. 17 Wake Forest in exhilarating fashion in Athens on Sunday, 5-4.
The Lady Bulldogs, who were playing without injured star, Junior Marissa Catlin, could only muster two wins in singles portion of the match. Senior Vanessa Castellano again looked strong, defeating No. 9 ranked Mariel Verban 6-1, 6-2. Sophomore Christa Grey forced doubles with a tough fought 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles over Lea Miller.
Once in doubles, however, Georgia (14-1) shined. The Lady Bulldogs won No. 1 and 2 doubles by a combined score of 16-1 score with the duo of Castellano and Grey blanking Wake Forest's Annemarie Milton and Caroline Ullring, 8-0. At No. 3 doubles, which would turn into the deciding match, junior Zoe Mellis and sophomore Aarthi Venkatesan rallied for an exciting 8-6 win to clinch the match.
Wake Forest (7-8) will return to action on Wednesday, March 31 at 2 p.m. to face North Carolina at Leighton Stadium.
