Mariel Verban Advances at Rolex Intercollegiate

Dallas, Texas --- Wake Forest's Mariel Verban picked up a first round win today at the Rolex National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, the third leg of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Collegiate Grand Slam hosted by Southern Methodist University at the Brookhaven Country Club.

Verban, a sophomore Bloomington, Ill., beat SMU's Dee Dee Herring 6-4, 6-4 in today's first round of women's singles. She will face the winner of a match between Southern Cal's Ditta Huber and Mississippi's Agnes Muzamel in tomorrow's second round at 9:30 a.m. Verban has a current singles record of 21-5 on the season and is ranked as the 10th best singles player in the country according to the ITA. Verban qualified for the championships by winning the Southeast Regional in Winston-Salem, NC.
