WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Wake Forest junior right-hander Mike MacDougal was selected in the first round of the 1999 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft by the Kansas City Royals with the 25th overall selection.
MacDougal, was named a 2nd-team All-American by Collegiate Baseball last week, is just the second player in Wake Forest history to be selected in the first round of the Major League draft. Former Demon Deacon left-hander Bret Wagner was the 19th overall selection in the 1994 draft by the St. Louis Cardinals.
MacDougal leads the Atlantic Coast Conference with 13 victories and is tops on the Wake Forest pitching staff with 108 strikeouts in 114 innings. He has held opponents to a .203 batting average and he tossed the first no hitter by a Demon Deacon pitcher in 60 years in his 5-0 shutout of Duke in March.
MacDougal will lead ninth-ranked Wake Forest (47-14) into the NCAA Super Regional at Coral Gables, Fla., which opens Friday night at 7 p.m. at Miami's Mark Light Stadium.
