MADISON, Wisc. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team advanced to the quarterfinals of the 1999 USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships by defeating Wisconsin, 6-2. The Deacons won four singles' matches and both doubles' matches.

Despite dropping matches at the No. 1 and No. 2 flights, Wake Forest's lower seeded players won all four matches and six of eight sets. Freshman Janet Bergman, playing No. 4 singles, and senior Caroline Ullring, seeded in the No. 6 flight, both won their matches in straight sets.

The Deacons No. 1 doubles team of sophomore Mariel Verban and Bergman defeated UW's Andrea Nathan and Barbara Urbanska, 8-6. This was only the third match that the Deacon duo had ever played together. Freshman Maren Haus and her partner, Ullring, were also doubles winners.

The Deacons, ranked No. 9 in the ITA, will play No. 1 Florida in the quarterfinals on Thursday afternoon at 3:30. Florida defeated Notre Dame, 7-2, to advance into the quarterfinals. The Gators have won 33 straight matches and are 5-0 all-time against the Deacons.
