Women's Tennis at the ITA Southeast Championships

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Seven of the top eight seeded players advanced to the second round of the ITA Southeast Indoor Championships on Thursday afternoon. Each victorious seeded player won in straight sets. North Carolina's Jessica Zaganczyk, the seventh seed, lost to Kentucky's Christy Sigurski in three sets: 6-7 (3), 7-6 (5) and 6-1. The top two seeds, Megan Miller of Duke and Wake Forest's Mariel Verban each disposed of their opponents in straight sets.

Miller defeated Elon's Sarah Benhaim, 6-0 and 6-0. Verban held off Tennessee's Emily Woodside 6-4 in the first set and then 6-0 in the second set. The same can be said on the doubles side as seven of the top eight seeds advanced to the next round. Clemson's duo of Cecilia Hincapie and Catherine Galvin, the eighth seed, fell to Middle Tennessee State's combo of Jennifer Bryans and Alex Toelle, 8-6.

The tournament continues tomorrow with second and third round action at the Indoor Tennis Center. The second singles competition begins at 9 a.m.
