COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Texas A&M women's tennis team fell to the No. 16-ranked Wake Forest Demon Decons, 6-1, Thursday at the new A&M Varsity Tennis Center in front of 377 in a rain shortened match.
The Aggies, now 6-2 overall, managed to win only one match in the singles portion, but it was a big one.
A&M freshman Martina Nedorostova notched her sixth straight win as she ousted Wake's Mariel Verban, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 1 singles. Verban entered the match ranked No. 6 nationally, while Nedorostova is ranked No. 98.
"Martina just ceases to amaze me" A&M head coach Bobby Kleinecke said. "She is very athletic and talented. I think that was one of the top five singles wins we have ever had."
In other action for the Aggies, freshman Leah Killen forced a third set with Wake's Maren Haus at No.3 singles, but fell, 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-3. Killen record falls to 10-7 overall and to 4-3 in dual play.
A second rain delay ultimately ended the match early.
"I think we got beat by a better team tonight," Kleinecke said. "They really didn't do anything to hurt themselves."
The Aggies will now embark on a four match road trip which takes them to Iowa State, Missouri, North Carolina and to North Carolina State.
