Women's Tennis Eliminated from USTA/ITA Indoor Nationals

MADISON, Wis. - Top-ranked Florida (7-0) knocked ninth-ranked Wake Forest (1-3) out of the 1999 USTA/ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championships with a 6-0 victory in the quarterfinals on Friday afternoon. The Deacons failed to win a single set and are now 1-4 in USTA/ITA National Team Indoor quarterfinal matches.
Mariel Verban, Wake's top player, lost in straight sets to Whitney Laiho, ranked 60th in the ITA rankings, 6-2, 7-5. Also falling at the hands of ranked Gators were Maren Haus, Annemarie Milton and Lea Miller.
Deacon freshman Janet Bergman was an upset victim as she lost to unranked Jessica Lehnhoff, 6-4, 6-2. Bergman is currently ranked 40th in the ITA.
All three of Wake Forest's losses this season have come to Southeastern Conference opponents (Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Florida). The last time the Deacons started the season 1-3 was 1986. Wake Forest will play in the consolation round on Saturday, Feb. 20. Consolation matches begin at 10 a.m.
