Women's Tennis Falls to No. 11 Vanderbilt

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The eleventh-ranked Vanderbilt women's tennis team rolled to a 7-2 win today over No. 9 Wake Forest at Vanderbilt's Currey Tennis Center. The win improves to Commodores to 3-0 on the year while the Demon Deacons slip to 0-2.

In a clash of top 10 players at No. 1 singles, 10th ranked Mariel Verban of Wake Forest downed seventh ranked Julie Ditty of Vanderbilt, 6-3, 6-3. The Commodores posted wins at No. 2 through 5 singles. Callie Creighton defeated Jackie Houston, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2, Kristy Blumberg downed Maren Haus, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3, Anne Plessinger defeated 51st ranked Janet Bergman, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 at No. 4 and freshman Jenny Miller picked up her first dual match win, 6-4, 6-3 over Annemarie Milton. Lea Miller was a 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (5) winner for the Deacons at No. 6 singles over Kate Burson of Vanderbilt.

Ditty and Kristen Radford won what proved to be the deciding match of the match by defeating Verban and Bergman, 8-3 at No. 1 doubles. Blumberg and Burson, along with Creighton and Plessinger were both 8-4 doubles winners for Vanderbilt at No. 2 and No. 3 respectively.

The Commodores return to action at the National Team Indoor Championships next weekend in Madison, Wisconsin. Each of the 16 teams selected for the field are amongst the nation' s top 29.
