Women's Tennis Opens ACC Play With Win

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest and Clemson opened their 1999 Atlantic Coast Conference seasons with a match at Leighton Stadium on Saturday afternoon, the Deacons picked up a 7-2 victory. It was Wake Forest's seventh consecutive victory over Clemson (4-8, 0-1 ACC). The Deacons (5-6, 1-0 ACC) won five of the six singles match points. Sophomore Mariel Verban snapped a two-match skid with a victory over Carmina Giraldo at No. 1 singles, 7-5 and 6-3.
Freshman Lea Miller won her sixth match in her last seven outings. She defeated Kate-Maree Mair at No. 2 singles, 6-1 and 6-0. Bergman is now 4-1 on the season at the No, 2 flight position. Fellow freshmen Maren Haus and Lea Miller also picked up victories for the Deacs. Junior Annemarie Milton improved her overall record this season to 17-11 with a win at No. 5 singles.
The Deacons also won two doubles match. The team of Bergman and Verban won 8-4 at the No. 1 flight, while Milton and Miller scored a victory in the No. 2 flight.
Wake returns to action tomorrow, Sunday, March 21 against non-conference foe, Furman. Match time is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Leighton Stadium. The match will be moved to the Indoor Tennis Center in case of inclement weather.
