Verban Advances in ITA Summer Championships

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Mariel Verban, a junior on the Wake Forest women's tennis team, advanced to the quarterfinals of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Summer Championships at the College of William and Mary by defeating Janice Nyland of Oregon 6-3, 6-1 Thursday.
At stake in this tournament are wild cards into the U.S. Open qualifying tournament.
Verban advanced to the match with Nyland by defeating Jessica Garrow of Colorado 6-3, 6-2 on Wednesday.
Verban, who received a first round bye as the top seed of the tournament, advances to face Michelle Faucher of Texas on Friday.
Faucher is in the quarterfinals as a result of her 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory over Jennifer Hall of Notre Dame on Thursday.
For Verban, this tournament comes on the heels of being named to the 1999 USA Tennis Collegiate Team, an honor she received in July.
