Verban in Semifinals of Women's Tennis ITA Championships

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Wake Forest junior tennis player Mariel Verban advanced to the semifinals of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Summer Championships at the College of William and Mary by defeating Michelle Faucher of Texas 6-4, 6-1 Friday.

Verban received a bye in the first round as the tournaments top seed. In the second round, she defeated Jessica Garrow of Colorado 6-3, 6-2. Her third round win came over Janice Nyland of Oregon 6-3, 6-1.

Also in the semifinals are Julie Ditty of Vanderbilt, Gabriel Lastra from Stanford and Sarah Taylor representing Brandenton Academy. At stake in the tournament are wild cards into the U.S. Open qualifying tournament.

In July, Verban was named to the 1999 USA Tennis Collegiate Team.
