Verban Falls in Semifinals

WILLIAMSBURG, Va.--Third-seeded Julie Ditty of Vanderbilt defeated top-seeded Mariel Verban of Wake Forest 6-3, 6-3 Saturday in the semifinals of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Summer Championships at the College of William and Mary.
Verban, after receiving a bye in the first round, reached the semifinals by defeating Jessica Garrow of Colorado 6-3, 6-2, Janice Nyland from Oregon 6-3, 6-1 and Michelle Faucher of Texas 6-4, 6-1.
Ditty will play Gabriel Lastra of Stanford, who defeated Sarah Taylor from Bradenton (Fla.) Academy 6-3, 3-2, in the finals Sunday.
The winner of the tournament gets a wild card into the U.S. Open qualifying tournament.
