WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest field hockey team defeated the American University Eagles 7-1 here at Kentner Stadium Sunday afternoon.

Jennie Shelton started the scoring at the 28:13 mark of the first half with an unassisted goal to give Wake a 1-0 lead. Samantha Rush made it 2-0 with a goal with 12:21 remaining in the first half off an assist by Shelton. Shelton added her second goal of the game with 10:12 to go in the opening period to give the Deacons a 3-0 lead at halftime.

Amy Marchell and Jenny Everett each scored two goals in the second half and Magdalena Aguilar added a goal for American to make the final score 7-1.

Shelton, Everett and Marchell each scored two goals to lead the Deacs. Rush added a goal for Wake Forest.

With the win, Wake remains unbeaten on the season at 5-0, while American drops to 1-4 with the loss.

Wake Forest plays host to the Davidson Wildcats Wednesday, Sept. 15. The game is set for 7 p.m. at Kentner Stadium.
