WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest midfielder Rachael Lewis scored one goal and assisted on another to lead the Demon Deacons to a 2-1 upset of 18th-ranked Clemson on Friday night at Spry Stadium before a crowd of 2,131.

With the victory, Wake Forest improved to 5-1 on the season and 1-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Clemson dropped to 5-2 overall and 0-1 in league play.

The Demon Deacons jumped on the scoreboard first at the 30:12 mark in the first half when Sarah Kate Noftsinger finished passes from Lewis and Anne Shropshire from five yards out. Lewis made the score 2-0 at 42:30 when she gobbled up a loose ball in the box and scored from 10 yards out. The score remained 2-0 for much of the second half until Clemson's Beth

Keller scored with a long ball from 25 yards out to cut the lead to 2-1 at the 83:43 mark. The Tigers mounted a furious rally in the game's final minutes, but the Demon Deacon defense held on to preserve the victory.

The game was even on both sides of the ball with each team having a number of additional scoring opportunities. Noftsinger put a header just over the crossbar in the game's 38th minute while Clemson's Heather Beem sailed a hard shot just high of the goal in the 67th minute.

The Tigers outshot the Demon Deacons, 19-13, but Wake Forest goalkeeper Erin Regan made five saves to hold the Clemson offense in check. The Tigers' Katie Carson made four saves in goal on the night.

Both Wake Forest and Clemson will return to action on Sunday. The Demon Deacons will host Florida State at 1 p.m. at Spry Stadium while the Tigers will face North Carolina at 6:30 p.m. in Chapel Hill.
