CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The University of Virginia men's soccer team had its sights set on recording its first Atlantic Coast Conference victory of the season. However, the Cavaliers knew they were up against a tough opponent as the Wake Forest Demon Deacons were looking for their first conference win as well. After playing through a scoreless first half of play, WFU and UVa traded goals in the second half before heading to overtime tied at 1-1. Neither Virginia or Wake Forest could score the game-winning goal through two overtime period and the two teams finished the contest tied at 1-1 in front of 1,575 spectators at Kl?ckner Stadium.
Wake Forest jumped on the scoreboard first when Bobby Gehring gathered a cross from the right side of the box from teammate Paul Vogel at 49:50 to make it a 1-0 Demon Deacon lead. Trailing by a goal, the Cavaliers turned on their offensive attack. After having several scoring opportunities denied, Virginia knotted the game at 1-1 when Kyle Martino (Westport, Conn./Staples) fired a shot from 15 feet away that ricocheted off the top of the cross bar. Martino's shot was directed straight down in front of the goal and then bounced away from the goal area where UVa's Curtis Bush (New Orleans, La./Isadore Newman) headed the loose ball past Wake Forest goalkeeper Sean Connor at 68:21 to tie the game.
That would be all the scoring posted in the game by both teams, as the two squads battled through two overtime periods, ending the game in a 1-1 tie.
With the tie, Virginia's record moves to 3-2-1 overall, 0-1-1 in the ACC. Wake Forest's record slides to 4-0-2 overall, 0-0-1 in the conference. The Cavaliers will return to home action on Wednesday, September 22 when Virginia faces intrastate rival Virginia Tech. The contest is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. and will be played at Kl?ckner Stadium. The Demon Deacons will return to action on Friday, September 24 when Wake Forest hosts Richmond.
