WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's volleyball team defeated Western Carolina and Montana State today to capture the 1999 Deacon Invitational title, recording a perfect 4-0 record in tournament play. The Demon Deacons were led by All-Tournament pick Margaret Davidson and Tournament MVP Julie Cowley, as they improved their overall record to 5-0. Montana State went 3-1 in the Invitational to place second, followed by William & Mary (2-2), Wyoming (2-2) and Western Carolina (0-4). A wrap-up of all of Day 2's matches:
MATCH 1: WILLIAM & MARY DEF. WESTERN CAROLINA, 3-0 (15-11, 15-8, 15-7) Laura Wilson recorded 14 kills and a .542 hitting percentage to lead the Tribe to the win. W&M's Melissa Owen added 11 kills and 11 digs, while Kerri-Ann Grosso had 41 assists. The Catamounts' Ramsey Herron had 11 kills and 10 digs.
MATCH 2: MONTANA STATE DEF. WYOMING, 3-1 (15-12, 15-10, 13-15, 15-13) Stephanie Laya had 17 kills and 12 digs to lead the Bobcats over the Cowgirls. MSU's Julia Handwerk added 10 blocks, and Brooke Olsen had 44 assists. Wyoming's Brooke Lowry tallied 53 assists and 10 digs.
MATCH 3: WAKE FOREST DEF. WESTERN CAROLINA, 3-0 (15-9, 15-5, 15-11) Corie Miles recorded 10 kills and a .444 hitting percentage for the Demon Deacons, while Ashlee Phillips netted 40 assists and six digs. WCU's Christy Attebery collected 19 kills and 12 digs to earn a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
MATCH 4: WYOMING DEF. WILLIAM & MARY, 3-0 (15-7, 15-10, 15-7) Wyoming's Melody Friehauf netted 11 kills, five blocks, and a .563 hitting percentage to earn All-Tournament honors as the Cowgirls swept the Tribe. UW's Brooke Lowry added 36 assists and 11 digs. W&M's Ellen Gazdowicz had nine kills and seven digs, as the Tribe was held to just a .057 hitting percentage for the match.
MATCH 5: WAKE FOREST DEF. MONTANA STATE, 3-0 (15-11, 15-8, 15-13) Tournament MVP Julie Cowley recorded 48 assists, six digs, and three blocks to lead Wake in the tourney title game. All-Tournament pick Margaret Davidson added nine kills and five blocks, while Katie Horne netted a team-high 14 kills for Wake. Montana State was led by All-Tournament choice Cori Carper, who tallied 11 kills.
