COLUMBIA, S.C. --- Wake Forest junior Maren Haus (Brielle, NJ) fell in the finals of the A-1 singles bracket at the Gamecock Classic earlier today. Haus dropped a 6-2, 6-3 match to North Carolina's Julie Rotondi, who is ranked 90th nationally.
Haus won her semifinal match on Saturday, 6-4, 6-2 over Kentucky's Brooke Skeen, to set up Sunday's final. This is her second appearance in a tournament singles final this season, as she won the B singles bracket at the William & Mary Invitational last month.
In the three events in which the Wake Forest women's tennis team has participated so far this fall, a Demon Deacon has advanced to the finals in the top singles bracket in all three events. Sophomore Bea Bielik (Valley Stream, NY) won the previous two events, the William & Mary Invite and the ITA National Clay Courts.
Haus was one of two Demon Deacons competing in the Gamecock Classic this weekend. Freshman Aimee Smith (Norcross, GA) went 0-2 in singles matches. Haus and Smith also teamed up in doubles, posting a 1-2 record during the three-day event.
The Wake Forest women return home for their next tournament, the Wake Forest Invitational, to be held Oct. 13-15.
