WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's soccer team came from behind to upset No. 14 Virginia 2-1 on Thursday evening at Spry Stadium. In a pivotal ACC matchup that went down to the wire, Gabi Lieb scored the game-winning goal for the Demon Deacons with less than four minutes remaining in regulation. Virginia falls to 7-6 overall and 2-3 in the ACC while Wake Forest improves to 7-6-1 overall and 2-2 in the ACC.
"It is just a reward for us," said Wake Forest head coach Tony da Luz. "In the loses we've had lately we've played well and created lots of chances, we just haven't been able to finish, so they really rewarded themselves tonight with not giving up. They could have easily given up with all the illness and injuries - especially when Stacy (Roeck) went down yesterday in practice. Katherine Winstead was probably the player of the game. She was assigned to number ten (Virginia's Lori Lindsey) at the beginning of the night and she (Winstead) shut her down, making her ineffective."
In a mass of people gathered around the goal, Virginia's Katie Tracy kicked a shot up against the underside of the cross bar bouncing down into the Demon Deacon's goal, giving the Cavaliers a 1-0 lead 29 minutes into the game. Down 1-0 at halftime, Wake Forest turned up the intensity in the second frame, outshooting the Cavaliers 6-3. Emily Taggart beat Virginia's goalkeeper to a ball, got around her and punched in the equalizer on the open net in the 64th minute. Taggart, a junior forward for the Deacs, has five goals on the season.
Tied 1-1 and time dwindling down, Wake Forest midfielder Melissa Murray-Hobbs popped up a free kick into the middle of the Cavalier's box, which A.B. Robbins played to Gabi Lieb. Lieb, a sophomore from Greensboro, N.C., blasted it home for her first career goal as a Demon Deacon and sealing the upset victory for Wake Forest.
The Demon Deacons return to action Tuesday, Oct. 17, when they travel to Clemson, S.C., to take on No. 5 Clemson at 7:00 p.m.
