WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team welcomes six other schools to campus this weekend for three days of action on the courts as it hosts the annual WFU Invitational. The event, which begins this Friday, takes place at Leighton Stadium and the Upper ?8? Courts adjacent to Reynolds Gym on WFU's main campus. Four singles draws and two doubles brackets will be played over the course of the three-day event.
Tournament participants include players from Marquette, Rice, Richmond, South Florida, Virginia Tech and William & Mary in addition to host Wake Forest. Two teams finished the year ranked in the nation's top 25 last season ? Wake Forest (5th) and William & Mary (16th).
Wake Forest sophomore Bea Bielik (Valley Stream, NY), who has already won the top singles title in two tournaments this fall, is the No. 1 seed in 'A' singles. Bielik is currently ranked 11th nationally. Deacon junior Janet Bergman (Pinehurst, NC), ranked 31st nationally, is seeded second in the same draw. Bielik and Bergman both begin play with singles matches at 1:00 p.m. Friday at Leighton Stadium.
Another Deacon junior, Maren Haus (Brielle, NJ), is also competing in the 'A' singles draw, opening play at 9:00 a.m. Friday against Genevieve Houle of South Florida. Senior Jackie Houston (Kings Mountain, NC), currently ranked 66th nationally, is competing at 12:00 noon on Friday in the 'B' singles bracket.
In the 'A' doubles draw, the tandem of Bielik and Bergman enter as the top seed. The duo, which is ranked fifth nationally, captured the ITA National Clay Courts title last month. Their first match takes place at 9:00 a.m. Saturday versus Annie Goodrich and Karen Chao of Rice. Also at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, the WFU team of Haus and Houston, competing in 'B' doubles, faces Kristin Lanio and Bridget Bruner of Virginia Tech.
Play begins at 9:00 a.m. each day, with the finals in the four singles draws taking place Sunday at 9:00 a.m. (C & D) and 10:30 a.m. (A & B). Admission to all matches is free. In the case of inclement weather, matches will be played at the WFU Indoor Tennis Center, adjacent to Groves Stadium.
