The Wake Forest women's tennis team picked up a handful of wins Friday in the first day of its Wake Forest Invitational at Leighton Stadium. Bea Bielik and Janet Bergman advanced to the semifinals today in Singles Draw 'A'. Maren Haus split a pair of matches in Singles Draw 'A' and Jackie Houston has advanced to the semifinals of Singles Draw 'B' with a bye and a win.
Houston defeated Jeri Gonzalez of Rice 6-2, 6-1 after receiving a bye in the first round of Singles Draw 'B'. The senior from Kings Mountain, N.C., will face Jeanette Cluskey from Richmond in the Singles Draw 'B' semifinals Saturday afternoon.
Haus battled past Genevieve Houle of South Florida 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 in the first round of Singles Draw 'A' and then fell 6-1, 7-6 to Marquette's Laura Garcia in the second round. The junior from Brielle, N.J., will take on Ines Khelifi from Virginia Tech in the consolation bracket Saturday afternoon.
Bergman topped Ines Khelifi from Virginia Tech 6-1, 6-3 after receiving a bye in the first round of Singles Draw 'A'. The junior from Pinehurst, N.C., will face Marquette's Laura Garcia Saturday in the Singles Draw 'A' semifinals.
The top seeded Bielik downed Kristen Stubbs of Virginia Tech 6-3, 6-3 after receiving a first round bye in the Singles Draw 'A'. The sophomore from Valley Stream, N.Y., will take on Tina Harrison from South Florida Saturday in the Singles Draw 'A' semifinals.
Bielik and Bergman will begin doubles play Saturday when the top seeded Demon Deacon duo plays Annie Goodrich and Karen Chao from Rice in the Doubles Draw 'A'. Both pairs received a bye today in the first round.
Haus will team up with Houston in the Doubles Draw 'B' on Saturday. This pair of Demon Deacons will face Kristin Lanio and Bridget Bruner of Virginia Tech. Both teams received a bye today in the first round.
The Wake Forest Invitational continues all day Saturday, Oct. 14 at Leighton Stadium. The tournament concludes on Sunday, Oct. 15.
