Winston-Salem, NC - The fourth-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team took its 12th victory of the season Saturday afternoon with a 2-0 shutout victory over fifth-ranked Michigan at Kentner Stadium.
The Deacons and Wolverines engaged in a defensive battle until just over four minutes remaining in the first half. Junior forward Jemima Cameron blasted the ball into the back of the goal past Michigan goalkeeper Maureen Tasch off a WFU penalty corner. Senior forward Jenny Everett, who served the corner, and sophomore Maria Whitehead, assisted Cameron on what would prove to be the game-winning score.
Wake Forest was not yet finished in the first half, however. Freshman forward Kelly Doton knocked in a goal off a feed from Whitehead with 27 seconds left in the first half. The goal was Doton's seventh of the season.
The two teams held each other scoreless in the second half, as the Deacons held on for the 2-0 victory. Michigan out shot Wake 15-13, but Deacon goalkeeper Jaime Tressler played magnificently, recording 13 saves. The Deacs registered 10 penalty corners to only seven for the Wolverines.
"All-around, there have been some games where we dominated offensively. I think we had a great game both offensively and defensively today," head coach Jen Averill said. "We stepped up and stopped them on many opportunities - their forwards are extremely explosive and dynamic. I think our defense was very poised and played well. It was key for us to come out and get a couple of goals. It was a great Wake win."
Wake Forest improves to 12-2 overall, while Michigan drops to 14-3. The Deacons continue their non-conference home stand with a game against American at 1:00 pm on Sunday at Kentner Stadium.
