PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. --- Wake Forest women's tennis player Janet Bergman (Pinehurst, NC) won the singles consolation bracket at the ITA All-American Championships, held at the Riviera Tennis Club over the weekend. Bergman, ranked 31st nationally, won three straight matches, all over top 30 opponents, to win the bracket.
Bergman, a junior, automatically qualified for the main draw, but lost her first-round match to 24th-ranked Andrea Ondrisova of Virginia Commonwealth, 7-5, 6-3. In the first round of consolation, she bounced back to defeat 28th-ranked Julie DeRoo of Mississippi, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1. She then blanked 20th-ranked Katarina Markovski of South Carolina, 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals. After passing through the semifinals when her opponent withdrew due to injury, Bergman then defeated Duke's 23rd-ranked Kathy Sell, 6-2, 6-2, in the consolation final.
Bergman, along with her Deacon teammates, will return to action Nov. 1-6 when Wake Forest hosts the ITA Southeast Regional qualifying tournament.
