WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's soccer team defeated Davidson 4-0 Wednesday night at Spry Stadium. In a lopsided match, the Demon Deacons took 27 shots, while holding the Wildcats to only two. Wake Forest improves to 8-7-1 overall and Davidson falls to 13-6 on the year.
"That was probably the best attacking half that we've played all year as far as getting crosses in and finishing shots," said Wake Forest head coach Tony da Luz. "We are just really pleased with our performance tonight."
Sarah Kate Noftsinger scored the game-winning goal for Wake Forest nine minutes into the game when she drilled a shot from 12 yards out into the bottom right corner of the goal. Noftsinger, a junior midfielder from Richmond, Va., was assisted by Emily Taggart and Liz McDowell on the goal. She then returned the favor in the 24th minute, by assisting a goal by Taggart.
One minute after checking into the game, Wake Forest freshman forward Alena Thom collected a pass from Katie Johnson and scored, giving the Deacs a 3-0 halftime advantage. The goal was Thom's first collegiate goal. Eight minutes into the second half, Joline Charlton blew past the Davidson defense to score Wake's fourth and final goal. Charlton, a sophomore forward from Stone Mountain, Ga., leads the Demon Deacons with seven goals on the year.
Wake Forest starting goalkeeper Tracy Chao shared the shutout with Leslie Goelz. Chao, a sophomore from Raleigh, N.C., turned over the cage to Goelz with 32 minutes remaining in the match, changed into her old field jersey and checked into the game as a field player. A reserve defender on last season's squad, Chao moved to goalkeeper after the Demon Deacons lost both goalies to season-ending knee injuries at the beginning of the year. Nearly scoring, Chao took a shot at the end of the match that sailed just over the crossbar.
Wake Forest will return to action Friday, Oct. 27 for its last home game, when the Demon Deacons take on the defending national champions, No. 5 North Carolina at 7:00 p.m., at Spry Stadium.
