WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's soccer team beat No. 5 North Carolina 1-0 in front of a capacity crowd Friday evening at Spry Stadium. Stacy Roeck scored the game-winning goal for the Demon Deacons, converting a second half penalty kick in their final home game of the season. Roeck's goal was the first-ever scored by a Demon Deacon on the Tar Heels. North Carolina falls to 12-3 overall and 3-3 in the ACC, while Wake Forest improves to 9-7-1 overall and 3-3 in the ACC.
"One of the biggest goals we had coming into the game was to not give up a goal on a set play," said Wake Forest head coach Tony da Luz. "We've done well against UNC in the past, but lost on a corner kick or throw-in. I thought we defended those well tonight. Katie Johnson and Stacy Roeck did a great job on defense, as well as Katherine Winstead, who did her job and lost two teeth in the process. We wanted to defend and counter tonight, and we did just that."
Thirteen minutes into the second half of the scoreless match, Wake Forest forward Joline Charlton got loose on a breakaway and was knocked down inside the North Carolina penalty box, setting up a penalty kick for the Demon Deacons. Stacy Roeck, a defender for Wake Forest, stepped up and cashed in the PK for the game winner. Roeck, a junior from Solana Beach, Calif., has six goals on the season and 17 in her career. Few of Roeck's goals have matched the importance of the one she netted Friday, as Wake Forest earned its first-ever win against the defending national champions, North Carolina.
North Carolina outshot Wake Forest 28-5, but none could find their way past Demon Deacon goalkeeper Tracy Chao, who collected a season high 14 saves in the shutout win. Chao, a reserve defender for the Deacs last season, became the starting goalkeeper, despite not having any goaltending experience, after Wake Forest lost both its goalies to season-ending knee injuries before the year started.
The Demon Deacons return to action Sunday, Oct. 29, when they conclude the regular season against North Carolina State at 1:00 p.m. in Raleigh, N.C.
