WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Wake Forest volleyball team halted the North Carolina Tar Heels 3-1 (15-11, 7-15, 15-8, 15-7) in a conference win at Reynolds Gym Saturday evening.
North Carolina, the top-ranked team in the ACC, came out strong in the first game with a 3-0 lead. The Deacons quickly tied the game up at 3-3 and took as much as a three-point lead of their own before wrapping up the 15-11 win.
The Tar Heels stormed out to a 10-5 lead in the second game and Wake was unable to keep the visitors from collecting a .444 hitting percentage. North Carolina scored the game's final three points for the 15-7 game equalizer.
The third game seemed to resemble the second, with the Tar Heels pulling ahead 5-0 in the early stages of the game. Wake once again fought back to tie the game up at 6-6 and eventually took control from that point on. The Deacs outscored North Carolina 9-2 to move ahead 2-1.
The Deacon defense held the Tar Heels to a .179 hitting percentage in the fourth game, while managing a .308 percentage of their own. Wake played strongly and led by as many as nine points before winning the game's final three points for the 3-1 match win.
"This was a huge win for us - beating a team that was tied for the first spot in the conference," head coach Valorie Baker said. "This win was great for our confidence and I think it'll help us to finish the season on a strong note."
The Deacons were led by junior outside hitter Trina Maso de Moya, who recorded a match-high 23 kills and 20 digs. Junior middle blocker Margaret Davidson totaled 13 kills and 14 digs, while Ashlee Phillips added six kills and 13 digs. Phillips, a sophomore setter, contributed a match-high 56 assists. The story of the game, however, were the number of blocks registered by the Deacons. Wake recorded 16 blocks as a team, while holding North Carolina to eight team blocks.
North Carolina featured three players with double-figure kill totals. Nicole Reis registered 16 kills, Laura Greene killed 14 balls and Krista Buchholz totaled 12 kills. Setter Eve Rackham netted 45 assists, while defensive specialist Liz Feldman did her job with 16 digs.
The Deacons improve their record to 16-7 overall and 7-5 in ACC play. Wake wraps up its three-match home stand against Duke in a Halloween match at 7:00 pm at Reynolds Gym.
