Winston-Salem, NC - The fourth-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team defeated Duke 4-2 in a hotly contested ACC game at Kentner Stadium Wednesday evening.

Deacon forward Kelly Doton opened up the scoring with just over 30 seconds elapsed in the first half. Doton, a freshman, scored her sixth goal of the season on an unassisted shot past Duke goalkeeper Erica Perrier at the 34:22 mark.

Heather Aughinbaugh struck next, putting Wake up 2-0 with 26 minutes remaining in the half. Junior forward Jemima Cameron fed Aughinbaugh after a penalty corner for the team's second score. The Deacs continued their offensive attack, as junior forward Jennie Shelton added another goal to the scoreboard at the 5:18 mark. She took a cross from senior forward Jenny Everett in front of the cage to give Wake a 3-0 advantage.

Duke's Melissa Yuppa struck next, however, with the Blue Devils' first goal with just 31 seconds left to wrap up the first half. The two teams scored one goal each in the second half. Junior utility player Carrie Neidhardt, who sees action all over the field for the Deacs, scored Wake's final goal. She took passes from Maria Whitehead and Aughinbaugh, putting the ball into the bottom left corner of the cage for her fifth goal this season. Liz Bateman scored one last goal for Duke in a comeback effort, but the Deacons held on for the 4-2 win.

The Deacs out shot Duke 21-12 in the contest. Perrier recorded 11 saves, while Wake goalie Jaime Tressler stopped nine balls.

"I thought Duke played with a lot of emotion, but we played great hockey in the first half. We were transferring the ball well and looking for different combinations on the field," head coach Jen Averill said. "We did a much better job of taking care of things that we needed to take care of tonight. We definitely played better as a team."

Wake Forest improves to 11-1 and 2-1 in ACC play and will host North Carolina on Tuesday, October 10 at Kentner Stadium. Game time is set for 7:00 pm. The contest will not count towards league standings.
