CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's soccer team lost 5-0 to the North Carolina Sunday afternoon at Fetzer Field in the second round of the NCAA Women's Soccer Cup. The Demon Deacons end the season with a 11-8-2 overall record in an up and down season capped off with a fifth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament. North Carolina improves to 17-3 on the season and advances to the third round of the NCAA Tournament, where the Tar Heels will continue their quest for their 16th NCAA Championship and second in a row.
"First of all I would like to congratulate North Carolina on playing a great game," said Wake Forest head coach Tony da Luz. "They really are peaking at the right time. We didn't defend as well as we had wanted to today. Last time we defended a lot better against set plays and we did not do that as well today. I think three of their five goals were off corners or restarts. We just didn't play very well today and North Carolina did."
North Carolina opened up the game 15 minutes into the first half when Kalli Kamholz headed in a corner kick taken by Jena Kluegel. Two minutes later the Tar Heels struck again when Alyssa Ramsey knocked in a follow up shot after Meredith Florance bounced a shot off Wake Forest goalkeeper Tracy Chao. Demon Deacon forward Emily Taggart got past the North Carolina defense to rip the only shot of the first half for Wake Forest, just missing the right post.
Less than five minutes into the second half North Carolina found net again with a set play off a corner kick. Kluegel took the corner kick, Anne Remy touched it on to Leslie Gaston who scored, putting the Tar Heels up 3-0. In the 83rd minute Danielle Borgman redirected a cross from Kluegel which Ramsey netted. Less than three minutes later, Kluegel set up a fifth and final goal for North Carolina when Kamholz headed in another corner kick giving Kluegel four assists on the day. The Deacs got three more shots off in the second half, but none got past the Heels goalkeeper Jenni Branam, who earned the shutout with two saves.
Chao played a sensational game tending the Demon Deacon goal. Facing 25 shots, the 5-5 sophomore defender-turned-goalie from Raleigh, N.C., collected nine saves on the day, including a dazzling array of athletic, well-read, leaping stops.
