Winston-Salem, NC - The top-ranked high school singles player and three-time state champion from Indiana has signed a national letter-of-intent to play for the Wake Forest women's tennis team, as announced by head coach Brian Fleishman on Wednesday.

Katie Martzolf, of Indianapolis, Ind., will join the Demon Deacon tennis program in the fall of 2001. Martzolf, who is currently attending Park Tudor School, enters her senior season as the three time defending Indiana state champion in girls' singles. Martzolf has posted a 78-0 career record in singles, and has lost only one set over all 78 matches. She is ranked No. 1 in Indiana, and is also the top-ranked player in the Central States District (covering a 10-state area of the Midwest). Martzolf has led the Park Tudor girls' team to two state titles during her career and served as captain of Indiana's Whightman Cup team.

In addition to her athletic accomplishments, Martzolf is a high honor roll student who is currently serving as President of the school's Varsity Club, an community service-oriented organization consisting of over 175 Park Tudor student-athletes.

"We are very pleased with the addition of Katie to our tennis team," said Fleishman. "She is a well-rounded person, both on and off the court. We look forward to her making an immediate, positive impact on this team."

The Wake Forest women's tennis team finished the 1999-2000 campaign ranked fifth in the country, posted an 8-0 record in the ACC, and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament. The 2000-01 spring dual meet schedule begins on January 27 with a home matchup against Marshall.
