DURHAM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's soccer team played No. 16 Florida State to a 1-1 tie Thursday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament. The seventh seeded Seminoles advanced past the 22nd ranked and second seeded Demon Deacons 5-4 in penalty kicks. Wake Forest stands at 10-7-2 on the season and Florida State becomes 12-6-2 overall.
"No surprises really," said Wake Forest head coach Tony da Luz. "We fully expected a tough game from Florida State, we just didn't finish our chances. We had a good chunk of possession but we just couldn't get over top. I think without Joline Charlton in the game we were a little down. The best thing is that the game goes down as a tie officially."
The Seminoles got on the board early, scoring three minutes into the game when Rachael Watkin connected with a pass from Summer Corum. Wake Forest evened the score just before halftime with a goal from Katherine Winstead. A freshman midfielder from Raleigh, N.C., Winstead was assisted by Colleen Bradley and Alena Thom. The goal was Winstead's first collegiate goal.
With three minutes left in regulation, Emily Taggart slammed a shot of the right post nearly breaking the 1-1 tie, but niether team was able to score, sending the match into overtime. After two sudden death 15 minute overtime periods the game concluded as a 1-1 tie. Winstead subbed in for goalkeeper to go against FSU keeper Sarah Crawford in the sudden victory penalty kick shootout. Both teams marched five players out to shoot penalty kicks. Colleen Bradley , Liz McDowell and Stacy Roeck joined starting goalkeeper Tracy Chao and Winstead herself kicked one. Still tied up after the first five kicks, 4-4, Rachael Watkin connected for Florida State and Wake Forest's Emily Taggart missed - allowing the Seminoles to advance to the semifinals on Friday.
The Demon Deacons will await the selection show, Sunday, Nov. 5 to see if they receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
