The Wake Forest women's tennis program is hosting the ITA Southeast Regional Qualifying Championships at the WFU Indoor Tennis Center over the weekend.
Thirty schools from the southeast region, which spans North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Kentucky, are represented by 96 singles players and 64 doubles teams competing in this weekend's event. Eight other regional tournaments are taking place across the country this weekend as well. The finalists in both the singles and doubles brackets from all the regions will advance to the Rolex National Indoor Championships in Dallas, Tex. in February.
Thirteen singles players currently ranked in the nation's top 100 and three doubles teams ranked among the top 50 are competing in the southeast regional.
Qualifying action gets underway on Friday morning with singles matches beginning at 8:00 a.m. and doubles at 1:00 p.m. One round of singles and the first two rounds of doubles take place Friday. Saturday's action includes second round singles, beginning at 12:30 p.m., and third round and quarterfinals of doubles. The semifinals and championship in doubles take place Sunday, with the semifinals and finals of singles on Monday.
Wake Forest junior Janet Bergman (Pinehurst, NC) is the top-seeded player in the 64-member singles bracket.
