DEACON WOMEN'S TENNIS TOPS THE NATIONAL SINGLES, DOUBLES RANKINGS Bea Bielik listed at No. 1, WFU ranked eighth nationally as a team
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --- The Wake Forest women's tennis team boasts the No. 1 ranked singles player, the No. 1 ranked doubles team, and is the No. 8 team in the country in the final fall edition of the WingspanBank.com Collegiate Tennis Rankings, released this week by the intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
Wake Forest sophomore Bea Bielik (Valley Stream, NY) is ranked No. 1 in the country in singles. Listed 14th in the preseason rankings, Bielik went 12-0 in singles matches this fall, capturing singles titles at the William and Mary Invitational, the Wake Forest Invitational and the ITA National Clay Court championship.
Bielik was the first Wake Forest player to win an ITA Grand Slam event (the National Clay Courts) and was only the sixth women's player ever to sweep the event by capturing the Clay Court doubles title with teammate Janet Bergman (Pinehurst, NC). As a result, the duo is the top-ranked doubles team in the country heading into the spring. Ranked fifth in the preseason, Bergman and Bielik upset the preseason No. 1 doubles team from Pepperdine in the finals of the Clay Courts, and finished the fall season with a perfect 10-0 record.
Bergman is also ranked sixth nationally in singles, after posting a 14-5 record this fall. Ranked 31st in the preseason, Bergman defeated three higher-ranked opponents over the course of the fall. She fell to teammate Bielik in the finals of the Wake Forest Invitational, but was the only player to win a set over Bielik this fall. Bergman also won the consolation bracket at the Riviera All-American Championships and advanced to the semifinals of the ITA Southeast Regional.
Wake Forest junior Maren Haus (Brielle, NJ) appears in the singles rankings at No. 56. Haus went 18-7 during the fall, defeating four ranked opponents, and advanced to the finals of the ITA Southeast Regional. Haus is paired up with Deacon freshman Aimee Smith (Norcross, GA) in doubles, and the duo is ranked 36th nationally after compiling a 6-3 record this fall.
As a team, the Deacons are ranked eighth in the country. Wake Forest begins the spring dual meet season on January 27, when it hosts Marshall.
