Wake Baseball Falls To Notre Dame

MINNEAPOLIS - Paul O'Toole and Alec Porzel each drove in two runs to lead the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to an 8-5 defeat of the 24th-ranked Wake Forest Demon Deacons in the first day of the Hormel Foods Baseball Classic at the Metrodome on Friday.
Ben Clayton (3-1) started the game and pitched three innings, giving up two runs on four hits and walking four to take the loss for Wake Forest. Scott Cavey (2-0) pitched six innings, giving up just two runs on four hits and striking out seven to pick up the win for the Irish.
Notre Dame jumped on top early with two runs in the top of the second inning. Wake came back to cut the lead to 2-1 with a run in the fifth, but the Irish added two more in the top of the sixth. After Wake scored its second run of the game in the bottom of the sixth, Notre Dame extended its lead to 6-2 with two runs in the top of the eighth. Wake added a run in the eighth and two in the ninth and Notre Dame scored its final two runs in the top of the ninth to make the final score 8-5.
Corey Slavik and Chase Voshell each homered to lead the Deacons at the plate. Steve Stanley and Andrew Bushey each went 3-for-5 for the Fighting Irish.
With the loss Wake drops to 8-3 on the season, while Notre Dame improves to 3-1. Wake will play again on Saturday in the Hormel Classic. The Deacons take on the Georgia Bulldogs at 7 p.m. Central Time.
