Wake Women's Tennis Advances In ACC Tournament

NORCROSS, Ga. -- The top-seeded Wake Forest women's tennis team defeated the eighth-seeded North Carolina Tar Heels 5-1 in the quarterfinals of the 2000 ACC Tennis Championship at the Racquet Club of the South on Friday.

The match was decided by singles play only. Wake grabbed victories at Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 singles. Freshman Adria Engel played at the No. 1 spot, defeating Marlene Mejia 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. Fellow freshman Bea Bielik defeated Kendrick Bunn 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2. At No. 3, sophomore Janet Bergman defeated Erin Niebling 6-1, 6-2. Maren Haus was victorious at the No. 4 spot, defeating Caroline Hill 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. The team's lone senior Annemarie Milton defeated Kristin Koenig 1-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2 at No. 6.

With the win, Wake improves to 20-1 on the season. The Deacs advance to the semifinals of the tournament where they will face the winner of the Florida State-Georgia Tech match Saturday at 2 p.m.
