Wake Weathers Season Of Ups And Downs

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The 2000 season was one of ups and downs for the Wake Forest men's tennis team. The team completed the season with a record of 13-11 overall and 3-5 in the ACC.
The Deacs had the advantage of playing their first four matches at home. During that stretch, the team went 3-1. The wins came over East Carolina (7-0), UNC Wilmington (6-1) and UNC Greensboro (6-1). The one loss in the first four matches came to the Purdue Boilermakers (4-3).
Wake then took to the road for the next three matches. The Deacs defeated the William & Mary Tribe 7-0 in the first match to improve their record to 4-1. Up next were wins at Old Dominion by a score of 4-1 and Virginia Tech by a score of 6-1.
Wake then hosted the South Carolina Gamecocks before playing its next seven matches on the road. Wake lost in a close match to South Carolina 4-3. The Deacs then played their next three matches in the state of Florida. Wake lost in its ACC opener at Florida State 5-2, then traveled to Gainesville to take on the fourth-ranked Florida Gators. Wake fell to the Gators 5-2. The last stop on the Florida trip was in Tampa, to take on the South Florida Bulls. Wake fell 5-2 to drop its overall record to 6-5 on the season.
Following the Florida trip, Wake lost two ACC battles to North Carolina (7-0) and Virginia (4-2) before defeating WestVirginia 5-2 and Maryland 7-0.
The Deacs then returned home to take on the Duke Blue Devils, Wake fell to the fifth-ranked Blue Devils 5-2. Wake played the next three matches on the road losing to Clemson (5-2) and defeating Furman (7-0) and East Tennessee State (4-3).
Wake closed out the regular season going 3-1 in four home matches. The stretch included wins over ACC foes Georgia Tech and N.C. State and non-conference opponent High Point. The one loss was at the hands of Virginia Commonwealth.
Wake's season came to an end at the ACC Tournament. The Deacs lost their first-round match to the North Carolina Tar Heels by a score of 4-1 to make the final record 13-11.
