Bryan?Ray Diary - August 10, 2000
"Caldwell Time" is what we set our watches and clocks to. It's 10 minutes faster than normal, or what he (Jim Caldwell) calls "civilian time." So when practice began this morning at 6:45, in real life it was 6:35 in the morning. All the players and coaches go by "Caldwell Time." The freshmen learn that in their first group meeting.
I woke up at 5:45 this morning and took a shower. Showering before practice like that helps me loosen up. I did some stretching to get ready for the first practice of the season.
Our first practice, this morning, wasn't great, but it was OK for a first practice. You'd like for it to be more crisp. We're all a little rusty and we tried to get the kinks out. Overall, though, I'm not displeased.
After practice and breakfast, I went to get my haircut. I slept from 11 until just before I had to leave for the second practice. I HAD to sleep -- I was dead. It was tough getting up for the second practice.
I walked out on the field this afternoon and the sun was scorching. It was a barnburner. Today's practice was as hot as any that I can remember in my career. I think Coach Caldwell has some control of the weather. In the end, though, practicing in these conditions will help us. You just don't want guys to get muscle cramps or pass out.
Ater practice we lifted weights for 30 minutes and that was tough. We practiced pretty hard but by the time we got to the weight room, our tanks were pretty empty. It's something you've got to do and we have a good attitude about it, but I just didn't have anything left today.
We'll get some dinner tonight, have some meetings, get some rest and then get ready for another exciting day of two-a-days.
We know that the season opener is just three weeks from tonight and that we have a lot of work to do. We want talk too much about Appalachian State for a while, we need to focus on each individual practice and get better.
