WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest University women's soccer team, ranked 12th in the preseason polls, beat No. 27 Minnesota 3-1, in a preseason exhibition scrimmage Saturday evening at Spry Stadium. The two teams played three thirty-minute periods, using all available personnel in a physical match.
Lindsey Griffin got the Deacs on the board early, nailing a free kick a little under five minutes into the game. The sophomore midfielder from Englewood, Colo., did not score any goals last season, but led the squad with eight assists. The score remained 1-0 for the remainder of the first period and the entire second period.
Stacy Roeck hit the game-winning goal for Wake when she connected with a ball from Katie Johnson at the top of the goal box and sent it into the right side of the net at the 71:03 mark. Roeck, a junior defender from Solana Beach, Calif., had four goals for the Demon Deacons last season. Eight minutes later, Emily Taggart took a through ball from Joline Charlton and buried it into the bottom right corner of the net, putting the Deacs up 3-0. Taggart, a preseason All-America pick by College Soccer Online, froze the Gopher's goalkeeper, firing the ball off the outside of her right foot.
Minnesota rallied in the final ten minutes, firing a flurry of shots. Laurie Seidl followed up a shot on goal that deflected off Wake Forest goalkeeper Leslie Goelz to prevent the shutout.
Wake Forest starting goalkeeper, Erin Regan, left the game in the 58th minute with a knee injury. The trainers were uncertain as to the extent of the injury after the game. Regan, a junior from Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., earned first team all-ACC honors last season. She left the game with three saves and no goals against.
The Demon Deacons open the regular season on Friday, August 25 at Spry Stadium when they host UNC Greensboro at 6:00 p.m.
