WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --- The Wake Forest women's basketball team will go up against some of the nation's best, including defending national champion Connecticut, during the 2000-2001 campaign. The 27-game schedule, which tips off November 19, also features several regional rivalries in addition to the 16-game ACC slate.
"I think we've put together a competitive schedule," said Wake Forest head coach Charlene Curtis. "The non-conference games should help us prepare for ACC play. We need to experience success early in the season to give us confidence heading into the conference games."
Curtis, who begins her fourth season at Wake Forest, returns 11 letterwinners and four starters off a squad that posted a 7-21 record (3-13 ACC) in 1999-2000.
The Deacs open the season on the road versus Appalachian State, with the home opener taking place Sunday, November 25 against Western Michigan in Lawrence Joel Coliseum.
The month of December begins with four consecutive home contests, including Coppin State (Dec. 2), Liberty (Dec. 5), the ACC opener against Virginia (Dec. 9) and New Orleans (Dec. 17). Just before Christmas the team travels to Connecticut to play Quinnipiac (Dec. 19) and the Huskies in Storrs (Dec. 22). Following the holiday, the Deacs head west to face Arizona State (Dec. 30) in Tempe.
The conference schedule picks up again on January 2, 2001 with a contest at Duke. The Deacs take a break from conference play when they host Coastal Carolina on January 22. For the second straight year, the ACC Women's Basketball Tournament will take place at the Greensboro (NC) Coliseum March 2-5.
Wake Forest Women's Basketball Schedule Notes
- The 2000-2001 season marks the 30th year of women's basketball at Wake Forest University.
- Wake will face seven opponents this season who advanced to the 2000 NCAA Tournament -- Clemson, Connecticut, Duke, Liberty, North Carolina, N.C. State and Virginia. Of those seven, four advanced to the Sweet Sixteen with UConn winning the national title.

Both games take place in Lawrence Joel Coliseum. Additionally, several games during the conference tournament will be broadcast on Fox Sports Net South.
- The Deacs face three teams on the 2000-01 schedule for the first time -- Western Michigan (Nov. 25), Quinnipiac (Dec. 19) and Connecticut (Dec. 22).
- Wake Forest's two-game swing through the state of Connecticut in December will be a homecoming for senior Olivia Dardy, who hails from Norwalk, CT. Also, head coach Charlene Curtis spent two seasons (1995-97) as an assistant coach at UConn.
- The Deacs have a combined 22-26 record against the non-conference opponents on this season's schedule. The team posted wins last season over High Point (74-43) and New Orleans (58-57).
