WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's soccer team, ranked 14th in the nation, defeated Virginia Tech 5-1 Sunday afternoon in the Wake Forest/Nike Invitational at Spry Stadium. In the championship game, California came back from behind to top Missouri 2-1 in overtime.
"We were a little shaky in the first half. We were kind of shaky on our counters,? said Wake Forest head coach Tony da Luz. ?We were much more productive in the second half. We had much better crosses and shots and got some good goals. Moving Stacy (Roeck) up gave us much better presence up front and A.B. (Robbins) did a good job sweeping."
Stacy Roeck got Wake Forest on the board at the 18:54 mark scoring on a pass from Katherine Winstead. Roeck, normally the Demon Deacons' starting sweeper, started at forward and responded with the goal. Emily Taggart then found net for the Deacs, capitalizing on a Hokie turnover in the box. Virginia Tech scored a few minutes before halftime when Linda Bruce punched in a shot from Jessica Myers that bounced off Wake Forest starting goalkeeper Tracy Chao.
The Demon Deacons extended their lead in the second half when Taggart was dragged down inside the penalty box and teammate Lindsey Griffin cashed in the penalty kick. Thirty-one seconds later Melissa Murray-Hobbs found Taggart, who chipped in a goal from 18 yards out. Griffin added a fifth and final goal for Wake Forest at the 85:17 mark when she pinpointed a shot to the bottom left corner of the cage on a breakaway.
In the championship game, California controlled most of the action throughout the match, outshooting Missouri 25-7, but could not get any shots past Tiger goalkeeper Megan Duncan. Scoreless through the first 68 minutes, Nikki Thole scored on a free kick from 22 yards out to give Mizzou a 1-0 lead. The Golden Bears turned up the pressure and Kathleen Cain hit the equalizer at the 88:41 mark, tying the game 1-1, where the score remained for the remainder of regulation. Three minutes and 58 seconds into sudden death overtime, Duncan deflected a shot taken by Cal's Kyla Sabo and Brittany Kirk headed in the rebound for the Golden Bears' game-winning goal.
Wake Forest improves to 5-2, California improves to 7-0, Missouri falls to 4-4 and Virginia falls to 3-7 on the season. The Demon Deacons return to action next weekend when they open ACC play Friday, Sept. 22 against Maryland at 7:00 p.m. and then host Iowa at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 24 at Spry Stadium.
